The value of each termination resistor should be equal to the cable impedance (typically, 120 ohms for twisted pairs). The value of each termination resistor should be equal to the cable characteristic impedance (typically, 120 ohms for twisted pairs). Star and ring topologies are not recommended because of signal reflections or excessively low or high termination impedance. This allows RS-485 to implement linear bus topologies using only two wires. With careful design, many peripherals can communicate via the SPI, and powerful multi-processor systems can be linked using this high speed bus. Systems of this type (4-wire, half-duplex) are often constructed to avoid "data collision" (bus contention) problems on a multi-drop network (more about solving this problem on a two-wire network in a moment). While a multi-drop "type" application has many desirable advantages, RS422 devices cannot be used to construct a truly multi-point network. The SCK pin’s synchronous clock signal has configurable phase, polarity and baud rate so that it can interface to a variety of synchronous serial devices. In some cases, however, a sophisticated network may have device groups on a network that use different clock configurations.

Ideally, the two ends of the cable will have a termination resistor connected across the two wires. Without termination resistors, reflections of fast driver edges can cause multiple data edges that can cause data corruption. Without termination resistors, signal reflections off the unterminated end of the cable can cause data corruption. This 6 ft long cable comes with a USB connector on one end and the red and yellow tipped plugs and does not require a driver if used with Windows 7 or later versions. RS422 devices. These networks are often used in a half-duplex mode, where a single master in a system sends a command to one of several "slave" devices on a network. The master initiates a communications request to a "slave node" by addressing that unit. Digital communications networks implementing the standard can be used effectively over long distances and in electrically noisy environments. The specification allows for data transmission from one transmitter to one receiver at relatively slow data rates (up to 20K bits/second) and short distances (up to 50Ft. @ the maximum data rate). Standards have been developed to insure compatibility between units provided by different manufacturers, and to allow for reasonable success in transferring data over specified distances and/or data rates.

RS422 (differential) was designed for greater distances and higher Baud rates than RS232. In its simplest form, a pair of converters from RS232 to RS422 (and back again) can be used to form an "RS232 extension cord." Data rates of up to 100K bits / second and distances up to 4000 Ft. Since it uses a differential line over twisted pair (like EIA-422), it can span relatively large distances (up to 4000 feet or just over 1200 metres). To interface devices that support synchronized serial interfaces, but are not configurable like the QScreen, determine the device’s requirements for clock phase and polarity and configure the QScreen’s CPHA and CPOL accordingly. The CPHA bit determines whether data is valid on the leading or trailing edge of the clock. It is important to note that when the CPHA bit is 0, the /SS line must be de-asserted and re-asserted between each successive data byte exchange (68HC11 Reference Manual, Section 8.3.2). If the CPHA bit is 1, the /SS line may be tied low between successive transfers. The SPIE bit in the SPCR (SPI control register) enables SPI interrupt handling. The hardware detects the start-bit of the transmission and automatically enables (on the fly) the RS485 transmitter.

EIA-485 (formerly RS-485 or RS485) is an OSI Model physical layer electrical specification of a two-wire, half-duplex, multipoint serial connection. In a computer system, SCSI-2 and SCSI-3 may use this specification to implement the physical layer for data transmission between a controller and a disk drive. RS423 is another single ended specification with enhanced operation over RS232; however, it has not been widely used in the industry. 12 V and -7 volts will allow correct operation of the receiver. This connection may be used to limit the common-mode signal that can be impressed on the receiver inputs. Because a mark (logic 1) condition is traditionally represented (e.g. in RS-232) with a negative voltage and space (logic 0) represented with a positive one, A may be considered the non-inverting signal and B as inverting. If A is negative with respect to B, the state is binary 1. The reversed polarity (A positive with respect to B) is binary 0. The standard does not assign any logic function to the two states. RS485 meets the requirements for a truly multi-point communications network, and the standard specifies up to 32 drivers and 32 receivers on a single (2-wire) bus.
