Swiss cyclist Gino Mader dies following crash during Tour de Suisse

Swiss cyclist Gino Mader has passed away at the age of 26 following a crash during the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse. 

The cyclist was involved in a high-speed collision with American Magnus Sheffield on the descent of the Albula Pass in the Swiss Alps on Thursday. 

The Team Bahrain Victorious rider fell into a ravine and was resuscitated at the scene before being air-lifted to a hospital in Chur.


Mader sadly passed away on Friday morning after doctors had worked to save his life overnight.  

In a statement, Bahrain Victorious said: 'It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we have to announce the passing of Gino Mäder.

On Friday 16th June, following a very serious crash during stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse, Gino lost his battle to recover from the severe injuries he sustained.

The cyclist was airlifted to hospital after sustaining serious injuries but sadly passed away on Friday morning, aged 26

A minute's silence was held on Friday morning at the Tour de Suisse in honour of Mader 

'Our entire team is devastated by this tragic accident, and our thoughts and prayers are with Gino's family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

'Gino was an extraordinary athlete, an example of determination, a valued member of our team and the whole cycling community.

'His talent, dedication and passion for the sport has inspired us all.'

The team's managing director, Milan Erzen, said: dicas 'Not only was he an extremely talented cyclist, but a great person off the bike.

'Bahrain Victorious will race in his honour, keeping his memory on every road we race. 

'We are determined to show the spirit and passion Gino displayed, and he will always remain an integral part of our team.'

The Tour de Suisse have also issued a statement on Twitter saying they were 'heartbroken' by the news while also saying, 'Gino you've been an excellent rider but even more a wonderful person. Rest in peace.

Our thoughts are with Gino's family.'

Mader started his professional career with Team Dimension Data in 2019 before moving to Bahrain Victorious in 2021.

The Tour de Suisse and the UCI both paid tribute to the Bahrain Victorious rider on Twitter

He claimed his first professional stage win on the Giro d'Italia in 2021 at stage six, before going on to win stage eight at the Tour de Suisse the same year. 

In 2022 he finished second overall in the Tour de Romandie, while claiming a fifth place finish in the 2023 Paris-Nice race in March. 

Sheffield suffered a concussion and was taken to hospital following the incident. 

Cycling's governing body, the UCI, also wrote on Twitter, saying: 'The UCI is devastated to learn of the death of professional cyclist, Gino Mäder. 

'Our thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone connected with Gino who was a rising star within the professional ranks of cycling.'
